Abstract

Eponyms are linguistic units formed on the basis of the names of historical figures, cultural phenomena, or significant social events. In language, they perform not only a nominative function but also reflect the cultural experience of a particular historical period, collective memory, and social perceptions. For this reason, eponyms can be regarded as a linguocultural phenomenon that preserves and transmits cultural information through language. The study of eponyms therefore provides an opportunity to explore the relationship between language and culture. The aim of this research is to determine the place of eponyms within linguoculturology and to examine their formation, semantic features, and patterns of usage in Kazakh and English. Particular attention is given to the role of eponyms in conveying cultural meanings and historical knowledge. The study employs linguocultural analysis, etymological analysis, and comparative methods, together with both qualitative and quantitative approaches to linguistic data. The research material includes eponymous units found in various scientific fields and in general language use. The results demonstrate that eponyms should be considered not only as terminological units but also as linguistic phenomena that carry cultural and cognitive meanings. They arise from historical personalities, cultural experience, and social transformations and gradually become integrated into everyday language. The findings also show that globalization, intercultural interaction, and historical and political changes significantly influence the development and spread of eponyms. The research highlights the importance of studying eponyms within linguoculturology and clarifies their role in representing national cultural codes. The results may contribute to further studies in linguistics, onomastics, and cultural research.
